Giant Anteater

The Giant Anteater is a large insectivorous mammal native to Central and South America. His body measures are between 160 and 210 cm including his tail, has a weight from 25 to 39 kg. The snout is elongated and tapered and the tongue is 60cm long and is covered with a sticky substance to capture insects. This animal lacks of teeth.

It seems to be daytime in uninhabited areas, winter and rainy days. In densely populated areas becomes night. Solitary or in pairs, moving continuously and over long extensions. Is an excellent swimmer diving into the water often and even is able to cross large rivers.

Habitat & Range: Dry forests and rain forests.

In Costa Rica, the Giant Anteater has been saw in the regions of the Huetar Norte, Cordillera Volcanica Central, Guanacaste, Osa and Tortuguero.
